The intent of the CASCADE project is to set up an action plan for the smart management of the energy used in airports based on the Fault Detection Diagnosis (FDD) Methods, and to develop a methodology able to support technology solutions customized by building, starting from an existing ICT infrastructure.

A measurement framework and a set of data, as well as monitoring equipment and a performance benchmark, will be established as part of the project, so as to optimize interventions and at the same time meet the specifications of European airport users.

The FDD Method will help to determine the state of energy management in airport facilities, and may also be used to identify any problems in system design, equipment efficiency, and selected operating settings.

CASCADE will allow the conversion of FDD results into information through the development of an energy action plan linking Actions, Actors and ISO standards, through a portal based on a management web system.

Additionally, the project will provide to the European Commission the opportunity to involve the entire system of airports, considered “politically visible and public centres” vital for European connections. In this respect, ACI-Europe has ensured its support in providing a direct channel aimed at informing and sharing with the 450 Association member airports belonging to EU Countries.

In industrial terms, CASCADE intends to achieve long-term impacts, creating jobs and significantly addressing the European Commission’s 20-20-20 target.

Airport operators have long been attentive to energy flow management processes in their facilities, and maintain a high focus on research for new smart technology solutions to be integrated with the current ICT applications installed in airports.

Through these, CASCADE will be able to access terminals, HVAC systems, renewable energy systems, cogeneration plants, parking spaces, maintenance hubs and security systems.

Lastly, the project is expected to yield a return on investment within the third year of activity, and will result in a 20% reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
